Saving Planet Earth

There has been an increasing awareness of the amount of plastics in our oceans and on our beaches and this awareness has recently been highlighted by the great Sir David Attenborough.
The shocking images of the 5 mile radius of floating plastic litter in the Caribbean Sea both saddened and maddened me whilst making me feel guilty about what mankind is doing to our lovely planet.

As I live near the sea and have a crazy Labrador cross Springer Spaniel I am often found on the beach - not starring out to sea but head bent either picking up litter or picking up beautiful sea glass.  The sea glass I keep and recycle into art; the rubbish goes straight into the nearest council bin or recycling container.

Manufacturers are slowly adjusting their practices which means reducing their use of  plastic packaging which is good news but it did make me think hotels/guest houses/b&b's should also get their act together to be more environmentally friendly.

Ten Tors Challenge

Dartmoor can be a most inhospitable place when the weather is bad and this weekend its not the best for the 2,400 youngsters undertaking the Ten Tors Challenge.

The event is organised by the British Army and is mainly attended by teenagers aged 14 to 19 from schools, colleges, scout groups and army cadets, although entrants have been limited this year from the South West due to increasing numbers interested in undertaking the challenge.

The event will see the participants trekking in teams of six up to 55 miles (89km).
The teams will camp overnight in what could be very wet and windy conditions this weekend and should arrive back at the starting point at 9am tomorrow Sunday 12th May. .

Almost 300 youngsters with special physical or educational needs will also take part in the Jubilee Challenge, completing routes of up to 15 miles (24km).

Troops involved in the event include members of the Army, the Territorial Army and the Royal Navy.
